A day in Morro Bay
By Colleen J., Chief Executive Officer
One of my favorite ways to spend a day on the Central Coast is taking a drive north to Morro Bay. It’s an easy, scenic trip along the coastline, and it always feels like a true getaway without going too far.
I like to start the day at the Morro Bay State Park Marina, where there’s a great little kayak rental spot right on the water. It’s a peaceful way to explore the bay, especially in the morning when everything feels calm and quiet. You’ll often spot wildlife along the way, and the views of Morro Rock from the water are something special.
After kayaking, I usually head over to Bayside Café for lunch, which is just steps away from the marina. It’s a relaxed, local spot with great views of the bay, and the perfect place to sit outside, enjoy a meal, and take in the surroundings.
From there, I make my way over to Morro Rock. You can drive all the way out toward the base, which gives you a close-up view of one of the most iconic landmarks on the Central Coast. At the end of the road, the parking area is unpaved, so just take it slow as you head in.
This is one of my favorite spots to pause and take it all in. On one side of the rock, you’ll often see sea otters floating in the calm bay, while on the other side, waves roll in with surfers catching rides. It’s a really fun contrast and always something new to watch.
It’s the kind of day that feels easy, relaxed, and full of little moments you’ll remember — a perfect mix of light adventure, great food, and classic coastal views.
